Kybella for Double Chin

FDA-approved injectable treatment

To reduce submental fat (below the chin)

Kybella is here! Much anticipated, and for good reason, we are excited to offer Kybella to our patients. We have been waiting for a better treatment for submental fullness (or double chin) for a long time, and now it’s here. With over 2,600 patients studied, Kybella has about an 80% patient satisfaction rate, and relatively little downtime and discomfort—which is amazing for any cosmetic procedure. Most patients require 2-4 treatments, spaced about a month apart.

Submental fullness is frustrating because it’s typically resistant to diet and exercise, and often times it’s a genetic trait that people struggle with even when they’re young. It can be influenced by aging, genetics, and weight gain, but most of the time it’s just plain stubborn—you either have it or you don’t.

It’s a good time to have a double chin that you don’t care for—CoolSculpting has introduced the CoolMini applicator which uses targeted cooling to reduce submental fullness. Some patients are better candidates for one or the other, and some may even do well with a combination of both.

  • DOWNTIME:       Mild-to-moderate swelling for a few days, injection site discomfort, possibility of bruising.
  • MAINTENANCE:    Most patients require 2-4 treatments, spaced about a month apart.

Frequently Asked Questions about Kybella

What is Kybella?

Kybella (deoxycholic acid) injection is the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment that is used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), also called, “double chin.”

How does Kybella work?

The active ingredient in Kybella is deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath your chin, Kybella causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat.

Is Kybella right for me?

To see if you’re a good candidate for Kybella, please give us a call at 310.546.1188 to set up your consultation or request an appointment online. If you are, we will work with you to develop a Kybella treatment plan.

How many people have been treated with Kybella?

Kybella has been the focus of a global clinical development program involving over 20 clinical studies with more than 2,600 patients worldwide, of which over 1,600 have been treated with Kybella.

Will I experience any side effects?

The safety profile of Kybella is well characterized. The most common side effects are swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness, and areas of hardness around the treatment area. Kybella can cause serious side effects, including trouble swallowing and nerve injury in the jaw that can cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness. These are not all of the possible side effects of Kybella.

How many treatments will I need?

During your cosmetic consultation, we will customize your Kybella treatment regimen, including how many treatments you need, based on your desired chin profile. Many patients experience visible results in 2-4 treatment sessions. During these sessions, we will administer Kybella into the fat under your chin using multiple injections. Up to 6 treatment sessions may be administered spaced no less than one month apart.

How long will the results last?

When injected into the fat under your chin, Kybella causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat. After the aesthetic response is achieved, retreatment with Kybella is not expected.
