Brown + Red Spots

Melasma (Dark Patches)

Melasma is a very common skin disorder characterized by dark patches of discoloration on the face. Factors contributing to melasma include sun exposure and levels of estrogen and progesterone—naturally occurring hormones that are also used in oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy. In addition to limiting your sun exposure and using sunscreens vigilantly, Dr. Magovern suggests the following treatments for melasma:

FRAXEL DUAL LASER TREATMENT

Fraxel DUAL Skin Surfacing treats fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, skin texture, and tone. It’s two lasers in one, allowing us to treat superficially, improving pigmentation and tone (sun spots, freckles, and melasma) and also to target skin texture, resurfacing deep lines and acne scars. What’s more, your skin gets better and better as collagen rebuilds over the following several months. Learn more »

CHEMICAL PEELS

We are excited to offer the Melanage Peel, the gold standard for the treatment of melasma. We apply the peel in-office and send you home to let it absorb for 6-10 hours (also included is a skin care kit that will last about one month). Dark patches will lighten leaving a brighter, more even skin tone. Learn more »

Lentigines (Brown Spots)

Lentigines, also known as sun spots and age spots, are harmless brown discolorations that occur over time with sun exposure. Common areas include the face, chest, hands and forearms. We have many effective treatments for improving the appearance of sun spots, ranging from home regimens to more aggressive in-office procedures.

Cherry angiomas are extremely common, come with age, and sometimes with pregnancy. They are harmless clusters of capillaries at the surface of the skin—sometimes red, sometimes purple. Treating them is quick and easy with Excel V laser treatment. Just takes a few minutes, relatively painless, no downtime, usually just one session. You may have some redness and transient swelling, but it doesn’t last longer than a day. Learn more »

Facial telangiectasias consist of small, dilated blood vessels near the surface of the skin. They are harmless and can develop anywhere on the body but are commonly seen on the face around the nose, cheeks, and chin. They can come with pregnancy and are common in patients with acne rosacea. Treating them is quick and easy with Excel V laser treatment. Just takes a few minutes, relatively painless, no downtime, usually just one session.
